- 1588, from M.Fr. pйdant, from It. pedante "teacher, schoolmaster," apparently an alteration of pedagogos (see pedagogue). Meaning "person who trumpets minor points of learning" first recorded 1596. Pedantic formed in Eng. c.1600.
